Before the French colonized this land it was inhabited by various Bantu
tribes. The land was called Ubangi-Shari. It became independent in 1960.
The country was highly influenced by Chinese politics, but this ended in 1965.
Premier Elizabeth Domitien governed from 1975-76. She was the first woman
in Africa to have that position. President Jean-Bedel Bokassa seized power in
1965 and proclaimed himself to be the Constitutional Emperor of the Central
African Empire (as he had renamed it). Bokassa's rule was considered to be
barbaric, cruel, and unjust. He was ousted in 1979 with the assistance of
the French government. His cousin, David Dacko, replaced him. In 1981
there was many strikes and economic crisis. General Kolingva replaced
Dacko. @
